How Avocado Can be a Snack before and after Exercise

Avocados from Mexico reminds you to speak with your physician prior to starting any new diet or exercise routine.

Imagine a racetrack, with all cars in their starting positions. The engines are revving and the flagman gives the signal to the drivers that the race is on. All of them take off at full speed, but one remains sat the starting line. Its support team just forgot to refuel it.

It’s inconceivable, right? The problem is, many people make the same mistake before and after exercise. Our bodies are not much different than a race car (or any other engine) as far as needing fuel before we begin physical activity.

The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that “adequate food and fluid should be consumed before, during, and after exercise to help maintain blood glucose concentration during exercise, maximize exercise performance, and improve recovery time.”

Take your water bottle to the gym with you, but don’t forget the snack! Avocado is an extremely versatile food and its nutritional properties make it a source of nutrients before and after exercise.

Before

One hour before your workout you can eat a serving of avocado toast. This simple snack provides calories, or energy, your body will use while exercising. You only have to spread 1/3 of an avocado on a slice of brown rice bread and that’s it! The avocado contains 80 calories, 4 grams of carbohydrates, 8 grams of fat, and 1 gram of protein.

In fact, some athletes use avocado to stock up on calories before a game or competition, as the green fruit can be eaten in the form of soups, salads, sandwiches, and smoothies.

After

The monounsaturated fats the avocado contains help repair the muscular expenditures the body experiences during a work-out, not unlike the maintenance that’s done on cars once the race is over. Vitamin B, also present in avocado (a serving of the fruit contains 6% of your daily recommended Vitamin B needs) gives a metabolic boost and helps your body assimilate other carbohydrates consumed during the day, allowing your body to make better use of exercise. And, of course, it’s also a delicious reward for all that effort you put into your work-out!
