Imagine this: Your refrigerator is full of delicious fresh food, bought with the money you work hard to earn. Suddenly, you discover that it has spoiled, and you have to throw it away. How would you feel?
It’s not an uncommon scenario, really. According to estimates from the USDA’s Economic Research Service, as much as 40% of the food supply in the United Statesgoes to waste every year. Often, it’s because we buy more food than we can eat before it spoils, but food waste occurs for other reasons, too. People often discard foods before or on their expiration dates or realize they don’t know how to prepare the foods they’ve bought. And food is lost in the production to process supply chain, as well as at points of sale, such as supermarkets and restaurants.
What can you do to help? Plenty! In addition to becoming a smarter shopper and buying just what you need, when you need it, you can learn how to consume more of the foods that you eat – including avocado! Did you know that you can do more than eat the avocado’s creamy green flesh? It’s true! From peel to pit, there are lots of ways to make sure that you’re sending minimal waste to the landfill.
Here are a few fun and simple ideas, many of which will be fun for the whole family:
Both the peel and the pit of the avocado can be used to make a natural dye that can color yarn, fabric, and paper. It’s as simple as boiling the pits in water for a half hour and peels in water for an hour, watching as the water turns pink.
Tell the kids it’s spa night and gather them in the kitchen to whip up an exfoliant made out of avocado peels and pits. Chop these both finely or blend them in a food processor with some avocado oil and overripe avocado or an overripe banana. You can add some Epsom salt or white sugar if you’d like. Once you’ve made your scrub, apply it on just washed skin and rub gently.
This isn’t an activity suited for younger kids, of course, but if you’re handy with a knife, you can make ornaments or jewelry out of avocado pits. And if you still want to get the kids involved, you can get them to add finishing touches, such as paint or glitter. Keep enjoying the amazing taste of avocado, and transform the ordinary into the extraordinary with these tips!
