When we think of summer, that favorite tradition of getting together with the family on the patio, in the backyard — or even on a balcony — all gathered around the grill. Outdoor cooking is energizing, it’s a great way to take advantage of good weather, and it’s super fun, too!
But sometimes your classic grill recipes need a touch of color, right? Specifically: green. In general we may think only about meats or certain vegetables when it comes to grilling, but did you know that you can also grill some delicious fruit? It’s true! The consistency and creaminess of the avocado make it perfect for grilling — and all without losing any of its great flavor or texture.
That’s why we’ve come up with some practical ideas for you — don’t forget to buy avocados when you’re planning you’re next grilling party!
We all like hamburgers and hot dogs. And some delicious steak or grilled sausage…forget about it! But the finishing touch that can take them all up a notch is some grilled avocado. And their prep couldn’t be easier.
About five minutes before you take the first round of meat or veggies off the grill, slice your avocados in half and use a spoon to take out the seed. With your grill brush, give them a light coating of olive oil and lemon. This will ensure that they don’t stick to the grill and that they maintain their color. Put them flesh down on the grill and in two minutes, turn them so you make pretty diamonds with the grill marks. After four minutes, remove them from the heat and serve.
We all love the freshness and texture of guacamole, but you can also cook up a delicious variation on hot summer days. Cut several slices of avocado and put them on the grill; give them about 2 minutes on each side. Don’t forget to add your olive oil and lemon mix so they don’t stick.
Grill a few big slices of onion and tomato. When your ingredients are ready, take them off the grill and cube them. Mix them in a bowl, add salt, pepper, and lemon to taste, and serve with tortilla chips.
In addition to their delicious taste and their nutritional properties (Did you know that avocados have nearly 20 vitamins and minerals?!), avocados have a practical benefit: their shape. They’re natural bowls that you can fill with anything you’d like. This summer, take advantage of some seasonal ingredients and take maximum advantage of your grill.
Just follow the instructions above to grill your avocados. Then, choose your fillings. We love sliced cherry tomatoes, grilled poblano chiles, or some panela cheese (also grilled!), chopped fine.
